I was 21 yrs old and 1st time mum to a 4 month old baby when i discovered I was 5 wks pregnant I was so excited but after blood tests indicated that I was over 5 months pregnant which wasn't possible I was sent to hospital for an early scan which was worrying as I thought there was something wrong with my baby but I was shocked and elated to discover that I was actually expecting twins- Our initial thought of how we would cope with 2 new born babies and a baby who would just be 1year old quickly went and we started to get really excited about my pregnancy. My pregnancy went well and we discovered I was expecting identical girls who we decided to name after the 2 grand mothers on either side of the family. Suddenly when I was 25 wks I went into premature labour and was taken to hospital but the doctors were unable to stop the labour as I was too far dilated I was so worrried as I knew it was too early for my girls to be born and I was warned they would be very poorly. Catherine weighed only 2lb when she was born and was rushed to the intensive care unit where she stayed for the duration of her short life - this was very difficult as it meant that we couldn't hold/care or bond with our beautiful daughter. Catherine started to do well in intensive care by picking up weight and taking her bottles and the staff thought she was on the road to re-covery which was very encouraging news. Unfortunately 24hrs before the funeral of her twin sister we got an urgent phone call to say that she had taken a turn for the worse and to get to the hospital straight away. Catherine survived for 17 days and at the hospital they told us that had catherine not be an identical twin she would have had survived as they believe by loosing her twin that this has has been to much for her heart to take as identical twins share the same feelings. Catherine lost her battle for life on what would have been her twin sisters funeral and I will always remember the doctor telling me to look at her face when she passed as he said she had a beautiful smile because she was going to be re-united with her sister where she wanted to be.
